No sooner had + S + V-ed than + S + V

例：No sooner had I entered the classroom than I knew there was something wrong.

我一走進教室就知道出問題了。

說明：

I. 這個句型是個倒裝句，否定副詞片語移到句首，其後主詞與助動詞位置顛倒。

He had no sooner lain on the bed than he fell asleep.

→ No sooner had he lain on the bed than he fell asleep.

他一躺在床上就睡著了。

II. 這個句型裡的時式，也可用簡單式。

a. No sooner is the government to raise taxes than a public outcry arises.

政府一要加稅就掀起公憤。

b. No sooner were the words about tax increases out of his mouth than he began to deny them.

加稅一脫口，他就開始否認。

c. No sooner did he recline in a chair than he began to snore.

他一靠在椅子上就開始打鼾了。

III. 這個句型與 as soon as 同樣功用。其他類似句型還有：

Scarcely/Hardly/Barely had + S + V-ed when before + S + V (過去式)

I had scarcely sat down when the doorbell rang.

→Scarcely had I sat down when the doorbell rang.

門鈴響時，我很少坐著。
