說明：
I.這個句型表示與過去事實相反的假設。
If
Billy hadn't
sprained his ankle, he would have won the race.
(In
fact, Billy sprained his ankle, so he didn't win the race.)
要是比利沒有扭傷腳踝，他會贏得競賽。
II.與事實相反的假設子句中的if可省略，這時助動詞had要與主詞倒置。
If I had
had enough money, I would have bought a new car.
àHad I
had enough money, I would have bought a new car.
要是當時我有足夠的錢，我就買新車了。
III.主要子句可為與現在事實相反，而附屬子句為與過去事實相反。反之亦然。
