God were to humiliate a human being, he would deny him knowledge.

說明：
I.
這個與未來事實相反的假設句型，表示極為不可能或無法想像的情況 。這個結構也可以用來表示建議，聽起來較不那麼直接，也較禮貌，如(a)句，另外were
to後的動詞不可為靜態動詞，如(b)句。

與事實相反的假設子句中的if可省略，這時were要與主詞倒置。

III.
這個句型如果改為現在式，則表示要達到某目標的預設條件。
