【用法】
be able to-V表示can V之意,而以生物為主詞時, can的過去式、未來式及完成式可分別用下列方式來表達:
was [were] able to
will [shall] be able to
have [has, had] been able to
尤因could常用來表示現在或未來的條件,故欲敘述單純的過去事實時,以使用was[were] able to較為妥切:
I was able to help you yesterday. (我昨天能幫你的忙。)
I could help you. (我或許能幫你忙。)

【補充】
be able to-V的主詞通常為生物,故無生物應避免使用,如:
A single spark is able to start a prairie fire.
應改為
A single spark can start a prairie fire.(星星之火可以燎原)。

但在科技文體中則常見及以無生物為主詞:
Heat is able to cure breast tumors in some animals.
(高溫可以治療某些動物的乳房腫瘤。)
