Part III. Reading Comprehension (20%)

If you're into polka dots, then you've probably heard of Yayoi Kusama. Her work is dominated by them and other repeating patterns, along with psychedelic colors. While her art has made her famous, what most people don't realize is that it has literally kept her alive all these years.

Born to a wealthy, conservative family in Japan in 1929, Kusama was treated badly by her mother as a child and showed signs of mental illness at a young age. In the late 1950s, she left that world and moved to New York City even though she didn't know anyone there. She climbed through the ranks of the local avant-garde art scene and quickly became famous. The polka dots came about in the 1960s with her protests of the Vietnam War. She would paint them on the participants of the anti-war gatherings she held.

A decade later, Kusama moved back to Japan and admitted herself to a mental institution to help her deal with the hallucinations and obsessive and suicidal thoughts she often suffered. However, instead of trying to cure her mental problems, she's used them to make art in the studio she kept down the street. It has been this way for the past 40 years, and she is still making art today.
