例：a.
Burn not your house to frighten the mouse away.
不要為了嚇走老鼠而燒毀自己的房子。(勿以大砲轟小鳥；投鼠忌器。)
b.
He that can’t endure the bad will not live to see the good.
無法撐過困境的人，無法看到好結局。
說明：
I.
不定詞(to
+ V)作副詞性質時，可表示某一行為的目的或結果。而分詞作副詞性質時可表示伴隨某一行為發生的動作。(b)句暗示走的時候沒有哭，到了才哭。又表示目的也可寫成so
as to + V或in
order to + V。
a.
She came crying.
她邊走邊哭著過來。
b.
She came to cry.
= She came in
order to cry.
她來的目的是為了哭。
II.
不定詞表示目的時可放在句尾或句首。但如果表示結果時，只能放在句尾。
a.
To find
a vase on the shelf, I looked up suddenly. (目的)
為了找架子上的花瓶，我突然往上看。
b.
I looked up suddenly to find a vase on the shelf. (結果)
我突然往上看，結果找到了架子上的花瓶。
III.
only + to + V表示不愉快的結果；never + to + V表示「結果不再」；too
+ adj/adv + to + V表示「太…而無法…」。
a.
She arrived at the station only to find the train had left.
她到達車站結果發現火車已經離開。
b.
They parted never
to see each other again.
他們分手就沒再見面了。
c.
The news is too
good to be true.

The news is so good that it cannot be true.
這消息太好了不可能是真的。
