Part III. Reading Comprehension (20%)

Humans are moral creatures. Guiding this moral behavior is the ability to understand other people’s feelings. However, are humans the only ones with these characteristics?

Truth be told, they are not. Scientific experiments have shown rats freeing other rats caught in cages despite having nothing to gain from the act as well as hungry rhesus monkeys refusing to shock other monkeys with electricity in order to get food. Similarly, animals in the wild have shown that they possess emotions such as compassion, guilt, and a sense of justice, just like humans. Take elephants, for example. They display anxiety when one of their troop dies and even cover the dead body with leaves and grass.

Not everyone in the scientific community is convinced, though. They point out that there's no proof that animals act out of emotion, Instead, they have reason to believe the creatures doing the helping are just responding to simple distress signals like odors and visual cues being sent. Also, these scientists doubt the feeling of guilt as seen on the faces of animals caught doing wrong. They attribute this to people's tendency to assign personality to all living creatures. Whether animals have a moral nature is still open for discussion. In the meantime, it's a good rule to treat all creatures with kindness.

(   ) 21. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

(A) To show how only humans know the difference between right and wrong

(B) To introduce the debate about whether or not humans are the only moral creatures

(C) To discuss why moral behavior is based on culture

(D) To list the reasons why animals don't understand other animals' feelings

(   ) 22. Which of the following is NOT listed as an example of animals demonstrating moral behavior?

(A) Elephants covering the dead body of a fellow elephant with leaves and grass

(B) Rhesus monkeys refusing to shock other monkeys for food

(C) Rats freeing other rats that are in cages

(D) Dogs fighting larger animals to protect their human masters

(   ) 23. Why are some scientists not convinced that animals genuinely feel guilt?

(A) Because experiments have proven that animals don't understand the concept of guilt

(B) Because people have the habit of assigning human personality to animals

(C) Because the scientists haven't seen with their own eyes animals acting out of emotion

(D) Because it is clear that animals only respond to simple distress signals

(   ) 24. What is the author's intention with the last sentence of the article?

(A) To inspire readers to make their own decision about the article's topic

(B) To support the idea that animals have a moral nature

(C) To encourage everyone to treat all animals with compassion

(D) To criticize the scientific community for conducting experiments on animals
