 分辨 : country, nation

兩個字 均指 "國家" ,

但是,

1.country :

較偏重 "土地, 地理, 氣候" ,

概念較廣

2.nation :

較偏重 "人民" ,

概念較窄

例1. :

"全國人民都支持他."

要用 "nation"

The whole nation stood

behind him.(正)

不可用 "country"

The whole country stood

behind him.(誤)

注意 : 名詞 nation 詞類變化 的 相關字

national : 1. adj. 國家的, 國定的, 國立的

2. n. 國民 ( 指 "人民" )

所以 nation : 指 某國家的 "人民"

( international : 國際的,

與 domestic : 國內的 相對 )

又例2. :

Some parts of that country are

much warmer than others.(正)

(那個國家的某些部份

比其他部份 溫暖的多.)

Some parts of that nation are

much warmer than others.(誤)

(注意: 本題 指 "氣候")

如果 語意 無關 這兩種概念,

"人民", 或 "土地, 氣候, 地理"

則 兩個字 通用

例3.

(超過 一百九十 個國家 是

聯合國的會員.)

Over 190 nations(/countries) are

members of the United Nations.

特別注意 :

1. national anthem : 國歌

2. country song : 鄉村歌曲

country 另有一解 , "鄉村, 鄉下" ,

與 city (/"城市, 都市") 相對

另外, state , 原 用於 美國 五十州,

的其中 "一州" ,

美國 是由 五十州 所組成,

是 聯合五十州, 美國是一個 大的國家,

各州 是 一個 小國(/state),

所以 在以下的用語

state :

1. 名詞: 國家, 國

a welfare state : 福利國家

the Secretary of the States :

( (美國) 國務卿 )

The railroads belong to

(在這個國家 鐵路屬於 國有.)

2. 形容詞: 國家的, 國立的,

正式的, 禮儀上的
